Saina Nehwal

Saina Nehwal is one of the best known Indian Badmintonplayers, and arguably the most promising female Indian Badminton player at themoment. Apart from upsetting some of the top seeded players in World Badminton,Saina has to her credit the achievement of being the first Indian woman to haveentered the Quart Final round of Badminton event at the Olympic Games.

Early Life & Introduction to Badminton
She was born on born on the 17th of March 1990 at Hisar, Haryana. Both her father, Dr. Harvir Singh andmother Usha Rani were former State Badminton Champions in Haryana, so she gotthe game of Badminton in her genes. Dr. Harvir Singh, a scientist at theDirectorate of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad encouraged her to pick up the gameof Badminton, and took her to Nani Prasad, the Badminton Coach at the LalBahadur Stadium in Hyderabad in the year 1998. The 8 yrs old Saina followed avery tough training schedule right since the beginning, and would travel almost50kms a day for the training. Further, Saina trained under S.M. Arif, aDronacharya Award winning Badminton Coach, and now is receiving Coaching at thePullela Gopichand’s Academy of Badmintonat Hyderabad.

National Badminton
Nehwal became the National Junior Champion in the year 2004, and won the titleagain in the year 2005. She was a runner up in the National Senior Championship2005, and won the title in the year 2006, repeating the victory in the year2007 again. Apart from these, she has won the All India Jr. Ranking Tournamentsof the year 2005 held at Chennai, Cochin,Bangalore and Pune. She further wonthe All India Senior Ranking Tournament 2005 held at Mumbai, and also emergedas the winner at the National Games held at Guwahati.

International Badminton
Saina made her International Debut in the year 2003 at the India Satellitetournament where she reached the top-16 round. The same year, she won theJunior Czech Open tournament. Further, she reached the Quarter Final at theCheers Asian Satellite tournament 2004 held at Singapore.She got her first International success at the India Satellite tournament 2005where she emerged as the winner of the tournament. After this, she also claimedthe Bingo Bonanza Philippines Open title in the year 2006, and the IndiaSatellite tournament 2006. She played at the All England Open 2007, and reachedthe Pre-Quarter Final round where she lost to World No. 3 player from China.She also reached the Quarter Final rounds at the Macau Open tournament 2007 andthe Dutch Open tournament 2007.

In the year 2008, Saina won the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix Gold tournament, andreached the Semi Final round of the LI NING China Masters Super Seriestournament also. The same year, she created a history of the sorts when shebecame the First Indian Woman ever to reach the Quarter Final round of theBadminton event at the Olympic Games. At the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, Sainafaced the 4th Seeded player and the World No. 6 Wang Chen from Hong Kong in the Pre-Quarter-Final match. Although in the Quarter Finalmatch, she lost to Maria Kristin Yulianti of Indonesiaby 28-26, 14-21, 15-21.

Major Upsets
Throughout her Badminton career so far, Saina has been able to topple some ofthe top Badminton players of the world in her tournaments. These playersinclude Huaiwen XU, Julia Xian Pei of Malaysia, and the World No. 6 Wang Chenof Hong Kong.

Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi popularly knownas Mahesh Bhupathi was born on 7th June 1974 in Chennai is a great Indian tennis player, broadly consideredas the better doubles players in the world and he achieved 11 Grand Slamtitles. He became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam tournament in the year1997. After he won the Australian Open Mixed Doubles 2006, he joined the elitegroup of eight tennis players who had received a Career Mixed Doubles GrandSlam. Mahesh was graduated from the University of Mississippi, USA.His father Mr. C.G. Krishna Bhupathi trained him right from his early years.

Career

In the year 1995, Mahesh Bhupathi started an efficient career in tennis. Hejoined with Leander Paes, the pair created wonders for the Indian tennis. In1997, this pair won six ATP Doubles and achieved three doubles titles, amongwith Wimbledon and French Open in the year 1999. Thepair became the first Indian squad to move the finals of all the four GrandSlams in 1999.
In 2002, Mahesh Bhupathi paired up with Max Mirnyi and they grabbed the USOpen Doubles title. In the same year, Bhupathi has been honoured with the PadmaShri award one of the highest civilian awards, for his Brilliant permanence intennis. In the same year, he won the 3rd Grand Slam Mixed Doubles title at Wimbledon,with the pair of Elena Likhovtseva. In the year 2004, he achieved the rank withthe top 10 tennis Doubles players.

paired up with Paes to participate at six more Competitions.The pair participated at Davis Cup, gained two ties and then paired torepresent Indiain the year 2004 Athens Olympic Games, there they maintained to move thesemi-finals. Further Mahesh among with Martina Hingis, defeated the squad ofDaniel Nestor and Elena Likhovtseva in the Australian Open Mixed DoublesCompetition in the year 2007, Bhupathi-Sania Mirza team won the mixed doublestitle at the Australian .

In the year 2002, Mahesh Bhupathi achieved five doubles titles withdifferent partners. Won titles in Mallorca and Chennaiwith the Paes, achieved TMS title in Hamburgwith Gambill and in Long Island with M. Bryan, and theUS Open with Max Mirnyi. And he won the TMS title in Monte Carlo and in Estoril in the year 2003, MaheshBhupathi living in Bangalore, hemarried to a Chennai model girl Shwetha Jaishankar on 24th November 2002.

Leander Paes, India'sTennis pride, was born in Goa on June 17,1973 and brought up in Kolkata. Born intoa family of sportsmen; His father, Vece was a member of the Indian field hockeyteam which won a bronze medal in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and mother,Jennifer a member of the basketball team; Leander began playing tennis at theage of 5.

He captured the 1990 Wimbledon Junior title and was ranked as the No.1 juniorplayer in the world at one time. Since then he has been representing Indiaat various international events winning matches bringing glory to the country.He is also a member of the Davis Cup squad since 1990, compiling a 32-19 careerrecord (21-12 in singles). In 1996 Atlanta Olympics, he won the bronze medal inthe Tennis event and made Indiaproud with this individual medal won after a long gap of 44 years. The lastindividual medal being the wrestling medal won by K.D Jadhav in1952 HelsinkiOlympics.

He teamed up with Mahesh Bhupathi to form the Indian doubles team and the duoin 1999, showed their class by winning the French Open and Wimbledonand entering the finals of the two other Grand Slam Tournaments; the Australianand US Opens. Holi is known as a festival of colours, fun and frolic. It is afestival of the Hindus. It usually comes in March. It is celebrated with gaietyin North India. Of late the South is also catching upwith the North in celebrating this festival of colours. There are differentstories about the importance of the festival. It is said that at one stage ademon by name Tarakasura conquered all 'Lokas or worlds' including heaven andwas teasing the 'Devas'. It became necessary for the Devas to pray to Lord Sivato bring forth a person who could conquer Taraka. But Lord Siva was in deep'Tapas'. He was not showing any interest towards Parvati, who was devotedlyserving him with a desire to marry. Then the 'Devas' requested 'Manmadha, theGod of Love' to help them and disturb the 'Tapas' of Lord Siva. He shot hisflower arrows at Lord Siva which disturbed his meditation. Lord Siva got angryand burnt 'Manmada' to ashes by opening his third eye. But the arrow had itseffect and Siva had to love Parvati and Kartikeya was born, who later killedTarakasura. The bonfire raisd on the festive occasion is to represent the 'Kamadahana'by Lord Siva. Another story is about Prahlada who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu,a bitter enemy of Asuras. So Hiranya Kasipu, the father of Prahlada entrustsPrahlada to his sister Halika to burn the boy alive. But in that attempt Halikagets burnt and Prahlada is saved. The bonfire is said to be a symbol ofHalika's death. Some others connect the colour festival to Rasalila of LordKrishna with Gopikas. Whatever may be the story behind Holi, the bonfiresymbolises burning of evil for the sake of good. The Holi day is full of funand frolic. All men and women, boys and girls and children join in thesprinkling of colours. Differences are forgotten. Enmity does not find a place.All are friends. Even old people join the fun. As per ancient texts when Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Sri Rama, Lord established Shiva Lingam at Rameshwaram before crossing the sea. He performed Rudrabhishek to express his devotion towards Lord Siva. This Pooja, where Lord Shiva is worshiped in His Rudra form, is hailed by all Vedic scriptures as one of the greatest Poojas to remove all evils, to attain all desires and for all round prosperity and peace. It is an abhishek /puja performed for Lord Shiva and it is very auspicious to perform.

In this puja Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Linga or Lingam and abhishek is performed with different articles like flowers, belpatra, milk, coconut water, honey, curd sugarcane juice etc.

Rudrabhisheka is believed to be a very good Homam performed with powerful hymns/mantras and it fulfills all the wishes of the person who gets it performed. This Homam bestows prosperity, fulfillment of all desires, it removes negativity, cut off the negative karma and give all round happiness in life.

Shravan ( Savan) month, or Shravana Mas, is one of the holiest Hindu months. This Hindi month is filled with various festivals and auspicious days. The most famous are the Mondays ( Somwars) in Shravan month which are dedicated to Lord Shiva and many people observe the famous Somvar Vrat. This is based on the Hindu calendar.

Shravan month is considered highly auspicious and is referred as one of the holiest months in Hindi Calendar. Shravan Month is also the first month in the Chatur Mas - four holy months. Rudrabhisheka performed in this holy month will give ten fold benefits to the person who will opt for performing it.

For heart palpation, boil ¼ teaspoon powdered cardamom (chhoti elaichi) seeds in thin tea water and drink. Regular intake of ripe bananas strengthens the heart. DIET -: Have a pleasant environment at mealtime. Distribute eating over 4-5 meals rather than 3 meals. Breakfast is a very important meal, and should not be skipped. Limit the salt and sugar intake. Reduce the amount of pickles, papads, chutneys, chocolates and large helpings of desserts. Have sweets/desserts only at the end of the meal and not during meals. Reduce the amount of spices added while cooking to prevent the risk of acidity/ulcers. Avoid the feeling of heaviness by eating small meals - avoid overeating. COMMON COLD -: If you want to try alternative treatment for common cold, then Cumin seeds could be your answer. Add two tbspoons cumin seeds to 4 1/2 cups of water. Let it boil for a minute. Then allow the water to cool and drink a glassful, twice a day for a few days. Chicken Soup is good for common colds and getting rid of cold in winter. Preparing Chicken Soup: Pressure cook two chicken thighs (with skin) along with 4 cloves of garlic, 1 inch piece of ginger and a few sprigs of Cilantro for 10 minutes. Season with salt before cooking. Remove skin and bones from the chicken. Serve hot. Sip hot "Ginger Tea" for clearing up a cold. CONSTIPATION -: A glass of hot tap water with a teaspoon of honey and a few drops of lemon/lime juice might do the trick. Eat a banana at night. Increase your dietary fibre content by eating fibre rich foods - fresh fruits and vegetables. STOMACH ACHE -: Rub a little Asafoetida on the stomach around the navel. Use a hot-water bag on your stomach and lay on your stomach. Ajwain seeds have been known to cure or lessen a stomachache. Chew on a few ajwain seeds. Then drink a cup of hot water. Ginger also helps. Have ginger tea without milk and sugar.FEVER -: The juice of the Sweet basil or Tulsi leaves can be used to bring down fever. Extract of tulsi leaves in fresh water should be given every 2 to 3 hours. In between one can keep giving sips of cold water. ACIDITY -: Try chewing on a clove. Eat a piece of Jaggery or Gur after lunch/dinner. SMALL CUTS -: Turmeric powder has been used as an antiseptic for years. Use clean turmeric powder (not one that is in a frequently used spice box) to heal a small cut. TOOTHACHE -: Chew on a piece of clove to relieve a toothache temporarily.

LordKrishna appeared over five thousand years ago in Mathura, India to Devaki andVasudeva in the jail cell of the tyrant Kamsa. The place of His birth is knownas Sri Krishna Janmasthana. However, in thesepastimes each devotee loves God either as a master, a best freind, amischievous son, or even as an intimate lover, thus revealing the infinitepossibilities of divine love. These early pastimes of Lord Krsna in Vrindavanaillustrate the extraordinary intimacy that one can have with God. When Kamsa saw his wrestlersdefeated, he ordered his friends to drive the brothers out of Mathura, plunderthe riches of Their cowherd friends, and kill Their fathers, Nanda andVasudeva. However, Krishna immediately killed Kamsa and Balarama killed hiseight brothers. Lord Krishna then established the pious King Ugrasena as theemperor of several kingdoms. In Mathura, both Krishna and Balarama were initiated by Gargamuni in theGayatri mantra> Later They went to live under the care of Sandipani Muni whoinstructed Them in all the Vedic arts and sciences in sixty-four days andnights especially in military science, politics and spirituality. As anoffering (guru-daksina) to Their teacher, They recovered his son from death.Although God does not need instruction from anyone else, Lord Krsna and Hisbrother set the perfect example : one must accept instruction from and serve abona-fide spiritual master to advance in spiritual life. For the next eighteen years, They continued to live in Mathura halting theimpending threat of many demonic kings. Later in Their pastimes Lord Balaramamarried a princess named Revati. Ramis the 7th incarnation of Vishnu and the central figure of the Ramayana epic.The Ramayan is the very soul of India. Everyone should emulate those ideals and grow intoideal human beings and ideal citizens. Ramtook birth to free the earth from the cruelty and sins of the demon King Ravana(Ravan). Ravana had practiced austerities in order to propitiate Shiva andBrahma, who had granted him immunity from being killed by gods, gandharvas ordemons. One of the gods had to take on a human form in order to be able todefeat Ravana. Ram was born as the first son of Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya.Ram's mother was Kausilya. Ram had three brothers : Bharata (Bharat) born fromthe second wife Kaikeyi, and Lakshmana (Lakshman) and Shatrughna born from thethird wife Sumitra. One day Saint Vishwamitra visited Ayodhya and askedDashratha to send Ram and Lakshmana with him because the Yakshini (demon) Tarka- with her two sons Mareech and Subahu - were terrifying him and the othersaints at his ashram. They were not letting them worship and meditate. Ram wentwith Lakshmana and Vishwamitra to kill Tarka. On the way to Saint Vishwamitra'sashram there was a dense forest. When they entered the forest Tarka came tokill them but Ram killed her and her son Subahu with a weapon given to him byVishwamitra. Ram also shot an arrow at Mareech and threw him 100 yojan faraway. LaterRam went with Saint Vishwamitr to Mithila where the wise King Janak ruled. KingJanak had organized a svayamvaraa (an acient custom wherein the bride chose herhusband of her own accord from amongst a number of suitors). It was announcedthat whosoever will bend the bow of Lord Shiva will marry King Janak's daughterSita. Sita was an incarnation of Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. But noneof the suitors was able to lift Lord Shiva's bow, except Ram. Ram lifted thebow with his one hand and bended it so hard that it even broke. So Ram got married to Sita, and hisbrothers got happily married to Sita's sisters. After returning and livinghappily in Ayodhya the old King Dashrath decided that it was time to give hiskingdom to his beloved son Ram. There Kaikeyi, the third and youngest wife ofthe King, claimed the throne for her son Bharat. A long time before the youngQueen had saved the King's life and he had promised to fulfill her two wishes.Manthara, the crooked and evil-minded maid-servant of Kaikeyi influenced thequeen to claim her wishes now in favor of her son and to request Dashrath tobanish Ram from the kingdom for fourteen years, and to install Bharat on thethrone instead. The King was shocked, his heart was broken, but he knew thattruth isthe highest Dharm, and that he had to fulfill his promise to his wife.So Ram went to exile happily, knowing that to obey and serve his father was thehighest duty of a son. AfterRam left to the forest, Dashrath died from the pangs of separation from hisbeloved son Ram. Bharat went to the forest to meet his brother Ram and torequest him to come back to Ayodhya. When Ram refused to return, in honor ofthe promise to his father, Bharat took Ram's "khadau" (woodensandals) and placed them symbolically on Ayodhya's throne. Until his brotherreturned from the exile Bharat served the kingdom as a true and honestcaretaker of Ram. Once Surpnakha, the sister of Ravana, passed by the place where Ram was living.She saw Ram and became impressed by his beauty. She transformed herself into abeautiful lady and went to Ram and asked him to marry her. When Ram refused andtold her he is already married to Sita, she became angry. Coming back to heroriginal form she ran towards Sita to kill her. When Lakshman saw that he cuther nose and one ear. Surpnakha then send her brother Khardushan with fourteenthousand rakshasas to avenge her. But all were killed by Ram. Surpnakha now sought vengeance through her older brother Ravana, but only gothis interest by pointing out that the beautiful Sita would be a fitting wifefor him. Ravana lured Ram and Lakshman away from Sita by sending an enchanteddeer of extreme beauty and then took Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. On the way,Jatayu, a vulture bird and old friend of Ram's father Dashrath, fought Ravanbut was fatally wounded. He lived only long enough to tell Ram what hadhappened upon his return. In Lanka, Ravana tried to threathen Sita into marrying him, but was rejectedagain and again. Meanwhile, Ram made an alliance with the monkey King Sugreeva,who had been exiled from his kingdom by his brother Bali. Ram helped Sugreevato regain his kingdom and in return Sugreeva raised an army of monkeys andbears, led by Hanuman. When they reached the sea, Hanuman flew across. On theway he had many adventures, which can be found on the Hanuman page.In Lanka, Hanuman promised Sita that help would come soon. When he was thencaptured by the rakshasas, Ravana ordered them to set fire to Hanuman's tail,wrapping it with oily rags. But Hanuman increased the length of his tail somuch that there seemed no end to it. He escaped and used his burning tail toset fire to all of Lanka. Meanwhile, Ram's army had build a huge bridge between Lanka and the mainland.They crossed the ocean and attacked Ravana's army. During the battle, Lakshmanawas heavily wounded, but he was cured by a magic herb which Hanuman flew allthe way to the Himalayas to obtain. Not finding the herb at first, Hanumanbrought the entire mountain just to be sure. Finally, all rakshasa generalswere killed and the battle become a single combat between Ravana and Ram.Finally, Ram killed Ravana with a special weapon given to him by saint Agastya.Thiswas a moment of great rejoicing. Ram and Sita were finally crowned King andQueen of Ayodhya, though people were doubting that Sita had preserved hervirtue while being Ravana's captive, which is another story in itself. Shiva is one of the gods of theTrinity. He is said to be the god of destruction. The other two gods areBrahma, the god of creation and Vishnu, the god of maintenance. The three godsrepresent the three fundamental powers of nature which are manifest in theworld viz. creation, destruction and maintenance. These powers existperpetually. Creation is going on all the time. So is destruction andmaintenance. All three powers are manifest at all times. They are inseparable.Creation and destruction are like two sides of a coin. And maintenance is anintegral part of the processes of creation and destruction. For example,morning dies to give birth to noon. Noon dies when night is born. In this chainof birth and death the day is maintained. To indicatethat these three processes are one and the same the three gods are combined inone form of Lord Dattatreya. Lord Dattatreya has the faces of Brahma, Vishnuand Shiva. Shiva is married to the Goddess Uma. Uma represents frakritiwhich means perishable matter. Shiva's marriage with Uma signifies that thepower of destruction has no meaning without its association with perishablematter. Destruction manifests itself only when there is perishable matter. LordShiva sits in a meditative pose against the white background of the snow-cappedHimalayas in Mount Kailas. His posture symbolises perfect inner harmony and poise, experienced by a man ofRealisation. He is rooted in God- consciousness. He revels in the bliss of thetranscendental Reality. Nothing disturbs him. The vicissitudes of nature, thechallenges of life, the trials and tribulations of the terrestrial world do notaffect him at all. He maintains perfect serenity, equanimity and tranquility inall environments and circumstances. The snow-white background symbolises the absolute purity of mind. When the mind is disturbed, agitated, you do not see the divinity in you. Recognising your divine self is like seeing a reflection in a pool of water. When the water is dirty or disturbed you cannot see your own reflection. Only when the water is clear and steady do you recognize your reflection. Similarly, the divinity in you is lost in a pool of thoughts. If the thoughts are dirty (tamasic) or agitated (rajasic) you miss your divine Self. By spiritual practices you ought to raise your personality from its tamasic and rajasic states to the state, of sattwa. In the sattviic state when the mind is absolutely pure and steady you recognise your supreme Self. That is the state of Shiva in Kaila. On the auspicious occasion of MahaShivaratri, Shiva performs the ecstatic dance of realisation. In the dance pose Shiva is known as Nataraja. The dance symbolises the thrill of god-realisation. Beyond the realms of the waking, dream and deep-sleep states of consciousness. Beyond the ' experiences of the body and its perceptions, the mind and its feelings, the intellect and its thoughts lies the bliss of Godhood. Shiva reaches this state of Godhood and dances with the intoxication of supreme bliss Shiva is said to have a third eye known as gyana chakshu. Gyana chakshu literally means eye of wisdom. The eye whose vision reaches beyond that of the two mortal eyes. The idea of the third eye is not to be taken literally to mean that a third fleshy organ exists in Shiva. It only means that Shiva has a divine vision of Reality. Your vision is confined merely to perceptions, emotions and thoughts but when you transcend the limitations of your body, mind and intellect you gain realisation of your inner Self. That is indicated by the opening of the gyana chakshu Shiva us also known as “Gangadhar”, Gangadhar literally means the carrier of Ganga (River Ganges). Shiva is said to carry the Ganges in his locks. Shiva is sometimes shown with his trident (“trishool”) in his hand. The “trishool” is a three pronged weapon which symbolizes the destruction of the ego with its three-fold desires of the body, mind and intellect. Shiva with his weapon indicated his victory over his ego and attainment of the state of perfection. Lord Vishnu, major god of Hinduism and Indian mythology, popularly regarded as the preserver of the universe. In the ancient body of literature called the Veda, the sacred literature of the Aryan invaders, Vishnu ranks with the numerous lesser gods and is usually associated with the major Vedic god Indra in battles against demonic forces. In the epics and Puranas-writings belonging to subsequent periods in the development of Hinduism-Vishnu (especially in his incarnations) becomes prominent. Some Puranic literature refers to him as the eternal, all-pervading spirit and associates him with the primeval waters believed to have been omnipresent before the creation of the world. So regarded, Vishnu is depicted frequently in human form, sleeping on the great serpent Shesha and floating on the waters.The concept of Lord Vishnu as preserver is comparatively late. It is based chiefly on two beliefs: humans may attain salvation by faithfully following predetermined paths of duty, and good and evil powers (gods and demons) contend for dominion over the world. Occasionally, the balance of power is upset in favor of evil, and then Lord Vishnu is believed to descend to earth in a mortal form (his avatar) to save humankind or the world. Ten such avatars (descents or incarnations) are commonly recognized, of which Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are the most important. Nine descents are thought to have already occurred; the tenth and last is yet to come. Scholars believe that Vishnu's role as preserver (or redeemer) arose from the characteristic practice of assimilating local legendary heroes and gods into the Hindu pantheon by attributing their deeds to one of the major Hindu deities.RepresentationLord Vishnu is depicted as dark blue or black (his avatars appear in other colors). Normally, he is depicted with four arms: One hand holds a lotus; a second holds a conch; a third holds a discus (which always returns by itself after being thrown); and the fourth carries a mace. The petals of the lotus are believed to symbolize the unfolding of creation; the conch is said to symbolize that from which all existence originates; and the discus and the mace reputedly were obtained by Lord Vishnu as rewards for defeating the God Indra. Lord Vishnu is said to possess also a special sword called Nadaka and a special bow called Sarnga. His wife is Goddess Lakshmi (also known as Shri), goddess of beauty and fortune. Lord Brahma is the first member ofthe Brahmanical triad, Vishnu being the second and Shiva, the third. Brahma isthe god of creation and he is traditionally accepted as the Creator of theentire universe. An individual's subtle body is constituted of his mind andintellect, that is, his entire thoughts. Man's subtle body is responsible forthe creation of his gross body and also the world that he experiences. Thethoughts of an individual determine the type of physical body he possesses. Thesame thoughts are also responsible for the type of world that the individualexperiences around him. As the thoughts, so the world. If a man possesses. goodthoughts he sees a good world. If his thoughts are bad he sees a bad world.Yudhisthira, a virtuous man saw virtue everywhere, while Duryodhana saw viceeverywhere. When thoughts are absent there is no world at all. In deep sleepthere are no thoughts, no world. This phenomenon is true not only of themicrocosm but of the macrocosm as well. The cosmic subtle body is the aggregateof all subtle bodies of all living beings. The cosmic subtle body called theHiranyagarbha, is said to be the creator of the entire universe. This creatoris Brahma. The manifested world of plurality has emerged from the unmanifestReality. To indicate this Brahma the creator is described as being born fromthe navel of Vishnu as he is lying on the great serpent, Ananta in the milkyocean. One of the earliest iconographic descriptions of Brahma is that of thefour-faced god seated on a lotus. The Lord has in his four hands a water-pot(kamandalu), a manuscript (Vedas), a sacrificial implement (sruva) and a rosary(mala). He wears the hide of a black antelope and his vehicle is a swan{hamsa). The description of Brahma like those of other deities of Hinduismbears a mystic symbolism. The lotus represents the Reality. Brahma sitting onthe lotus indicates that he is ever-rooted in the infinite Reality. Reality isthe foundation on which his personality rests. The four faces of Brahmarepresent the four Vedas. They also symbolise the functioning of the innerpersonpersonality (antahkarana) which consists of thoughts. They are the mind(manas), the intellect (buddhi), ego (ahamkara) and conditioned-consciousness(chitta). They represent the four ways in which thoughts function. They are themanifestations of the unmanifest Consciousness. The animal hide worn by Brahmastands for austerity. A seeker who desires to realise his godhead must first gothrough spiritual disciplines. Observing such austerities the seeker mustcarefully study and reflect upon the scriptural truths which are suggested bythe manuscript (Vedas) held in one hand. Having acquired the knowledge ofscriptures he must work in the world without ego and egocentric desires, thatis engage in dedicated and sacrificial service for the welfare of the world.This idea is suggested by the sacrificial implement held in the second hand.When a man works in the world selflessly he drops his desires. He is no longerextroverted, materialistic, sensual. His mind is withdrawn from itspreoccupations with the world of objects and beings. Such a mind is said to bein uparati. A man who has reached the state of uparati is in a spirit of renunciation.That is indicated by Brahma holding the kamandalu in his hand. Kamandalu is awater-pot used by a sanyasi-a man of renunciation. It is a symbol of sanyasa orrenunciation. The mind of such a man which is withdrawn from the heat ofpassion of the world is available for deeper concentration and meditation. Therosary (mala) in the fourth hand is meant to be used for chanting andmeditation. Meditation is the final gateway to Realisation. Through deep andconsistent meditation the mind gets annihilated and the seeker attains godhood.A god-man maintains his identity with his supreme Self while he is engaged inthe world of perceptions, emotions and thoughts. He retains the concept ofunity in diversity. He separates the pure unconditioned consciousnessunderlying this conditioned world of names and forms. Brahma's association witha swan is most appropriate in this context. A swan is described in Hindumysticism as possessing the unique faculty of separating pure milk from amixture of milk and water. It is reputed to have the ability to draw the milkalone and leave the water behind. Similarly does a man of Realization moveabout in the world recognizing the one divinity in the pluralistic phenomena ofthe world. Brahma is said to be the Lord of creation. The creator mustnecessarily possess the knowledge to create. Without knowledge no creation ispossible. Hence Brahma is said to be wedded to the goddess of knowledge,Saraswati. Life in this world is a manifestation of the three principles ofcreation, sustenance and destruction. In fact these three are interconnected.The apparent destruction is only an essential forerunner to creation. Destructionand creation go hand in hand. They are like two sides of a coin. For example,the destruction of morning is creation of noon and the destruction of noon iscreation of night. This chain of continuous destruction and constructionmaintains the day. Similarly, the destruction of childhood is the creation ofyouth and the destruction of youth the creation of old age. In this process ofbirth and death the individual is maintained. Hence the three gods of theTrinity viz. Brahma, Vishnu and Siva representing creation, maintenance anddestruction, are essentially one and the same. The above idea is well portrayedin Lord Dattatreya, in whose form the three gods are combined. Dattatreya hasthe three faces of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva to indicate that the threeprinciples for which they stand are inseparable. Lord Dattatreya is shown withfour dogs following him. The four dogs represent the four Vedas. A dog is oneof the most faithful animals in the world and it follows its master in allenvironments and circumstances. So, too, the Vedas arc said to follow aman-of-Realisation in the sense that all his actions, thoughts and desires arein perfect accord with the principles enunciated in the Vedic textbooks. Allcreations arise out of vikshepa (thought disturbances). This vikshepa-sakti isLord Brahma-the total mind-intellect equipment. Man, being essentiallyconstituted of his mind and intellect, has already invoked this vikshepasaktiand realised Brahma. Hence the worship and invocation of Brahma is practised byfew. Yet there are a few shrines dedicated to Brahma. He is worshipped andinvoked particularly by scientists and kings for generating more creative ideasto serve the world of men and matter. The rulers invoke the Lord in order tosurrender their ego and produce plans and schemes to serve the nation.Similarly, the research scholars invoke creative inspiration and flashes of newthoughts revealing the secrets of nature. Lord Brahma is not popularlyworshipped in India. This is so, because the idea of creation is repugnant toseeker of Truth since the creation of thoughts has veiled the infinite Reality.The attempt of all spiritual seekers is to destroy the existing thoughts and maintainthe state of single pointed thought until the Reality is revealed. Hence, Siva(god of destruction) and Vishnu (god of maintenance) are worshipped more thanBrahma. Lokpal BillIndia is a country where honesty and integrity in public and private life have been glorified and upheld in great epics such as the Vedas, Upanishads and in the books and practices of every religion practiced here.Yet, India today is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Bringing public servants under a scanner which makes them strictly accountable is the start of a movement against corruption in India. And one significant step in attacking the spectre of corruption in India will be the implementation of the lok pal bill.The Indian Lokpal is synonymous to the institution of Ombudsman existing in the Scandinavian countries. The office of the ombudsman originated in Sweden in 1809 A.D., and adopted eventually by many nations 'as a bulwark of democratic government against the tyranny of officialdom'. Ombudsman is a Swedish word that stands for "an officer appointed by the legislature to handle complaints against administrative and judicial action. Traditionally the ombudsman is appointed based on unanimity among all political parties supporting the proposal. The incumbent, though appointed by the legislature, is an independent functionary - independent of all the three organs of the state, but reports to the legislature. The Ombudsman can act both on the basis ofcomplaints made by citizens, or suo moto. She/he can look into allegations of corruption as well as mal-administration. The functionary is called by different names in different countries; its power and functions also vary. In the Scandinavian countries2 (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway) he is called the 'Ombudsman'. He can take cognizance of thecitizens' grievance by either directly receiving complaints from the public or suo moto on the basis of information provided by the interested persons, or from newspapers, etc. However, in the U.K. the functionary - known as the Parliamentary Commissioner - can receive complains only through members of parliament. The ombudsmen can investigate a complaint by themselves or through any public or private agency. After investigation, in Sweden and Finland, the Ombudsman has the power to prosecute erring public servants; whereas in Denmark, he can only order prosecution. However, the power of prosecution is very rarely used. The strength of the ombudsman lies in the publicity attached to the office, and the negative view that attaches itself to all that the office scrutinises. In Sweden and Finland, ombudsmen can also supervise the courts. In other countries, their authority is only over the non-judicial public servants. In almost all the cases they deal with complaints relating to both corruption and mal-administration. Objectives of the Lokpal Bill: The Lokpal was visualized as the watchdog institution on ministerial probity. Broadly the provisions of different bills empowered the Lokpal to investigate corruption cases against political persons at the Central level. Some important features of the Lokpal Bill have varied over the years; in its most recent avatar, the bill contains the following. • The main objective is to provide speedy, cheaper from of justice to people. • Members: Lokpal is to be a three member body with a chairperson who is or has been a chief justice or judge of the Supreme Court; and its two other members who are orhave been judges or chief justices of high courts around the country. • Appointment : The chairperson and members shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the following persons. It's not clear whether the committee has to make a unanimous decision or a majority decision will do. (a) The Vice-President (Chairman) (b) The PM (c) The Speaker of LS (d) Home Minister (e) Leader of the House, other than the house in which PM is a member. (f) Leaders of Opposition of both the houses. • Independence of the Office: In order to ensure the independence of functioning of the august office, the following provisions have been incorporated. o Appointment is to be made on the recommendation of a committee. o The Lokpal is ineligible to hold any office of profit under Government of India or of any state, or similar such posts after retirement. o Fixed tenure of three years and can be removed only on the ground of proven misbehaviour or incapacity after an inquiry made by CJI and two senior most judges of SC. o Lokpal will have its own administrative machinery for conducting investigations. o Salary of Lokpal is to be charged on the Consolidated Fund of India. Jurisdiction of Lokpal: o The central level political functionaries like the Council of Ministers including the Prime Minister, the Members of Parliament etc. o He can not inquire into any allegation against the PM in relation to latter's functions of national security and public order. o Complaints of offense committed within 10 years from the date of complaint can be taken up for investigation, not beyond this period. • Any person other than a public servant can make a complaint. The Lokpal is supposed to complete the inquiry within a period of six months. The Lokpal has the power of a civil court to summon any person or authority. After investigation, the ombudsman can only recommend actions to be taken by the competent authority. A number of safeguardshave been taken to discourage false complains or complain of malafide intent. • He can order search and seizure operations. • He shall present annually to the President the reports of investigation and the latter with the action take report has to put it before the both houses of parliament. It may be noted that the Lokpal is supposed to investigate cases of corruption only, and not address himself to redressing grievances in respect of injustices and hardship caused by maladministration. THE CURRENT SITUATION: Very recently a highly discouraging phenomenon has come to light, that is, the prevalence of corruption in the subordinate courts and even in High Courts. Probably due to this, the present government has planned to bring the Judiciary within the purview of Lok pal; this is one reason why the Bill has been referred to the Group ofMinisters . However given the history of Lok pal bill, there is a constant risk that the bill will simply lapse because no conclusion is reached within the life of this Lok Sabha! The political fraternity is understandably opposed to a Lok pal, since the purported target of the Lokpal is mainly the politicians themselves. The publicly stated reason for the current delay is that some important issues are as yet unresolved.

Shammi Kapoor (born Shamsher Raj Kapoor; 21 October 1931– 14 August 2011) was an Indian film actor and director. He was a prominent lead actor in Hindi cinema from the late 1950s until the early 1970s.
Shammi Kapoor was hailed as one of the finest actors that Hindi cinema had ever produced. Extremely versatile as an actor, he was the leading star of Hindi cinema during the late 1950s as well as the 1960s. He debuted in Bollywood in 1953 with the film Jeevan Jyoti, and went on to deliver hits like Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Dil Deke Dekho, Junglee, Dil Tera Diwana, Professor, China Town, Rajkumar, Kashmir Ki Kali, Janwar, Teesri Manzil, An Evening in Paris, Bramhachari, and Andaz and Vidhaata. He received the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in Brahmachari and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vidhaata in 1982.
He was given the name Shamsher Raj Kapoor at his birth in Mumbai to film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Shammi was the second of the three sons born to Prithviraj (the other two being Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor), both of whom were, like their father, successful Bollywood actors. Though born in Mumbai, he spent a major portion of his childhood in Kolkata, where his father was involved with New Theatres Studios, acting in films. It was in Kolkata that he did his Montessory and Kindergarten. After coming back to Mumbai, he first went to St. Joseph's Convent (Wadala) and then, to Don Bosco School. Shammi Kapoor finished his schooling from New Era School, at Hughes Road.
Shammi Kapoor had a short stint at Ruia College, in Matunga, Mumbai, after which he joined his father’s theatrical company "Prithvi Theatres". He entered the cinema world in 1948, as a junior artiste, at a salary of Rs. 1500 per month, stayed with Prithvi Theatres for the next four years and collected his last paycheck, Rs. 3000, in 1952. He made his debut in Bollywood in the year 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released. It was directed by Mr. Mahesh Kaul and Chand Usmani was Kapoor’s first heroine.
Film career
Kapoor started out with serious roles but with Filmistan's Nasir Hussain directed Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) opposite Ameeta and Dil Deke Dekho (1959) with Asha Parekh, he attained the image of a light-hearted, stylish playboy. Tall, athletic, lively, fair complexioned, green-eyed and with handsome features, Shammi was a heartthrob, and his good looks and physique complemented his image. Both the films were debut films of the respective actresses Ameeta and Asha Parekh and both went on to be big hits and are regarded as classics.
With Junglee (1961) his new image was cemented and his subsequent films were all in this genre. He particularly chose Mohammed Rafi as his playback voice. Though in his early career he had often played second fiddle to established heroines like Madhubala in films such as Rail Ka Dibba (1953) and Naqab and opposite Suraiya in Shama Parwana, producers after 1960 apart from the actresses from southern India, loved pairing Shammi with new heroines, three of them became huge stars in their own right in Hindi films: Asha Parekh, Saira Banu, and Sharmila Tagore of all his heroines, he said that Sharmila Tagore, Rajshree, and Asha Parekh were easy to work with He and Asha Parekh were paired together in four films, the most successful being the murder mystery Teesri Manzil (1966) and romantic film Jawan Mohabbat.
In the early fifties he accepted serious roles in women oriented films like Shama Parwana (1954), comedy flick Mem Sahib (1956) and thrillers like Miss Coca Cola (1956) and Chor Bazar (1954), which were all successful at box office and in tragic love story Mirza Sahiban (1957) (a box office flop), but did not gain recognition and fame among the masses. Other than the above hits, he had fifteen films as flops to his credit till 1957. It was only after triple success of Tumsa Nahi Dekha (1957), Ujala and Dil Dil Deke Deko (both 1959), that he became popular with the audience and became a star. The other hits in late fifties included Mujrim(1958), Char Dil Char Rahen, Raat Ke Raahi (1959). In the first half of the 1960s, Kapoor was seen in successful films like College Girl, Basant, Singapore, Boy Friend, Professor, Dil Tera Diwana, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, China Town, Kashmir Ki Kali, Bluff Master, Janwar and Rajkumar. Although nominated before, in 1968, he received the first Filmfare Best Actor award of his career for the film Bramhachari.
His pairing opposite Southern heroines were always a success at the box office. He delivered hits opposite B. Saroja Devi like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and Preet Na Jane Reet, with Padmini gave Singapore (1960 film), opposite Vyjayanthimala had hits like College Girl and Prince (1969 film). In the sixties his successful run continued untill new romantic incon Rajesh Khanna entered the scene in 1969. Sharmila Tagore and Saira Banu who made their Bollywood debuts with Shammi Kapoor in ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ and ‘Junglee’ respectively However Shammi did have commercial successes in late sixties, like Budtameez and Sachaai with Sadhana, Latt Saheb with Nutan, Tumse Achha Kaun Hai with Babita.
In the 1970s, Kapoor’s weight problem proved an obstacle in his path of success and ended his career as a romantic hero as his films started failing. His last hit film, in which he played the lead role, was Andaz (1971). With time, he moved to character roles and acted in films like Zameer, Hero and Vidhaata. In 1974, he donned the hat of a director and made Manoranjan, a film based on Irma La Douce. Two years later, he made Bandalbaaz (1976). However, both the films failed to create magic at the box office. His last appearance as a character actor was in the delayed 2006 film, Sandwich and in early 2011, he decided to act with his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor, the grandson of his brother Raj Kapoor.
Shammi turned into a successful supporting actor in the 70's, playing Saira Banu's father in Zameer (1974), when he had been her leading man a decade earlier in Junglee (1961) and Bluff Master (1964) and playing Amitabh Bachchan's foster father in Parvarish. He also directed Manoranjan (1974) a copy of Irma La Douce and in which he played a supporting role himself and Bundal Baaz (1976) starring Rajesh Khanna, but neither were successful commercially though got critical acclaims and were hailed as classics and to be ahead of its time. In the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to play supporting roles in many films and won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in Vidhaata (1982). He eventually cut down on film appearances by the late 1990s and early 2000s and made his appearances in the 1999 Salman Khan and Urmila Matondkar starring Jaanam Samjha Karo, 2002 release Waah! Tera Kya Kehna and delayed 2006 release Sandwich. He made his last appearance in Imtiaz Ali's directorial venture Rockstar co-starring his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor, the grandson of his brother Raj Kapoor.
Film director Shakti Samanta directed Shammi Kapoor in six hit films like Singapore, Pagla Kahin Ka, China Town, Kashmir Ki Kali, An Evening In Paris and Jaane Anjane and quoted in an interview “I found Shammi to be a thoroughly good man. Even in his heydays, he was humble."
Personal life
Shammi Kapoor met Geeta Bali in 1955, during the shooting of the film ‘Rangeen Raaten’, where he was the leading actor and she played a cameo. They fell in love, but since she was a year older to him and had acted with his elder brother and father, they were skeptical. Four months after they first met, they married at Banganga Temples, near Napean Sea Road of Mumbai. Hari Walia as the sole witness. They informed their parents only after their marriage. Geeta Bali did cameo in Shammi starrers 'Rangin Raaten' and Mujrim (1958) and were paired together in Coffee House, a box office dud and the successful Miss Coca Cola.
Shammi and Geeta lived a life of bliss in the coming years. They had a son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, on 1 July 1956, at Shirodkar's Hospital, Mumbai, a year after they were married. Five years later, in 1961, they had a daughter, Kanchan.
Tragedy struck in 1965, during the filming of Teesri Manzil. Geeta died of small pox, leaving Shammi with two small children.
It led to a failed romance with Mumtaz, his co-star from Brahmchari (1968).
In 1969, he married his second wife Neela Devi Gohil from the former royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. He was gaining weight rather significantly now and this ended his career as a romantic hero in the early 1970s. Andaz (1971) was one of his last hits.
Shammi Kapoor was the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI). He had also played a major role in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association. Kapoor also maintained a website dedicated to the 'Kapoor family’.
In 2006, he told interviewers that he underwent dialysis three times a week. Irrepressible even then, this punishing regimen has failed to depress him. Rather, he said that he was thankful to God for giving him so much.
He died around 5:15 am, 14 August 2011 at Mumbai Breach Candy hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for chest infection. He died of renal failure.

Kapoor was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on 7 August 2011 suffering from chronic renal failure. His condition remained serious for next few days, kept under ventilator support. He died on 14 August 2011, 05:15am IST, of chronic renal failure, aged 79.

Bikaner (Rajasthani: Bikana) is a District in the northwest of the state of Rajasthand in northern India. It is located 330 kilometres (205 mi) northwest of the state capital, Jaipur. Bikaner city is the administrative headquarters of Bikaner District and Bikaner division. It was formerly the capital of the princely state of Bikaner. The city was founded by Rao Bika. Bikaner. in 1486 and from its small origins it has developed into the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. The Ganga Canal completed in 1928 and the Indira Gandhi Canal completed in 1987 have allowed the farming of crops such as mustard, cotton, groundnuts, wheat and vegetables. Other industries include wool production and the mining of Gypsum, plaster of Paris and bentonite. Bikaner is famous for sweets and snacks (or namkeens in Hindi).
History of Bikaner-: Genealogy of Bikaner Royal Family from its establishment by Rao Bika in 1488 Prior to the mid 15th century, the region that is now Bikaner was a barren wilderness called Jangladesh.[4] In 1488 Rao Bika established the city of Bikaner. Rao Bika was the second son of Maharaja rao Jodha of the Rathor clan, the founder of Jodhpur and conquered the largely arid country in the north of Rajasthan. As the second son of Joda he had no chance of inheriting Jodhpur from his father or the title of Maharaja. He therefore decided to build his own kingdom in what is now the state of Bikaner in the area of Jungladesh. Though it was in the Thar Desert, Bikaner was considered an oasis on the trade route between Central Asia and the Gujarat coast as it had adequate spring water. Bika’s name was attached to the city he built and to the state of Bikaner (“the settlement of Bika”) that he established. Bika built a fort in 1478, which is now ruins and 100 years later a new fort was built about 1.5 km from the city centre which is known as the Junagarh Fort. Around 100 years after Rao Bika founded Bikaner the region's fortunes flourished under the sixth Raja, Rai Singhji who ruled from 1571 to 1611. During the Mughal Empire’s rule in the country, Rai Singh accepted the suzerainty of the Mughals and held a high position of an army general in the court of Emperor Akbar and his son Emperor Jahangir. His successful military exploits, which involved winning half of Mewar kingdom for the empire, won him accolades and rewards from the Mughal emperors. He was given the jagirs (lands) of Gujarat and Burhanpur. With the large revenue earned from these jagirs, he built the Junagarh fort on a plain which has an average elevation of 760 feet (230 m). He was an expert in the arts and architecture and the knowledge that he acquired during his visits abroad are amply reflected in the numerous monuments he built in the Junagarh fort. Karan Singh who ruled from 1631 to 1639, under the suzerainty of the Mughals, built the Karan Mahal palace. Later rulers added more floors and decorations to this Mahal. Anup Singh, who ruled from 1669–98, made substantial additions to the fort complex, with new palaces and the Zenana quarter (royal dwelling for females). He refurbished the Karan Mahal with a Diwan-i-Am (public audience hall) and called it the Anup Mahal. Gaj Singh who ruled from 1746 to 1787 refurbished the Chandra Mahal (the Moon palace). Following him, Surat Singh ruled from 1787 to 1828 and he lavishly decorated the audience hall (see picture in info box) with glass and lively paintwork. Dungar Singh who reigned from 1872 to 1887 built the Badal Mahal (the weather palace) named so in view of a painting of falling rain and clouds (a rare event in arid Bikaner). Ganga Singh who ruled from 1887 to 1943 built the Ganga Niwas Palace, which has towers at the entrance patio. This palace was designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Ganga Singh’s son Sadul Singh succeeded his father in 1943 but acceded to the Union of India in 1949. He died in 1950. During the 18th century, there was internecine war between the rulers of Bikaner and Jodhpur and also amongst other thakurs, which was put down by the British troops. Lalgarh palace built (Indo-Saracenic style) by Ganga Singh in the name of his father, presently a heritage hotel and also residence of the Royal family. Bikaner came under the suzerainty of the British Raj under a treaty of paramountcy signed in 1818, after which the Maharajas of Bikaner invested heavily on refurbishing Junagarh fort. Ganga Singh was the best-known king among the Rajasthan princes and was a favourite of the British Raj. He earned the title of Knight Commander of the Star of India, served as a member of the Imperial War Cabinet, represented India at the Imperial (First World War Conferences) and the British Empire at the Versailles Peace Conference. His contribution to the building activity in Junagarh involved separate halls for public and private audiences in the Ganga Mahal and a durbar hall for formal functions. The hall where he held his Golden Jubilee as Bikaner's ruler is now a museum. He also built a new palace north of Junagarh fort which was designed and built by Swinton, the third of the new palaces built in Bikaner. He named the building Lalgarh Palace in honour of his father and moved his residence from Junagarh fort to this palace in 1902. The royal family still lives in a special suite in the Lalbagh palace, which they have converted into a heritage hotel.
The internal transport system in Bikaner consists of autorickshaws and city buses. Bikaner is connected to some of major Indian cities via broad gauge railway. The city has direct rail connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Agra, Jalandhar, Baroda, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Jaipur, Surat, Jalandhar, Thiruvananthapuram, Chandigarh, Jammu, and Ahmedabad. However, there is no rail connectivity for other major Indian cities like Chennai, Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Gorakhpur and Puri. Bikaner is well served with roads and is linked directly to Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, Ambala, Ahmedabad, Haridwar, Jodhpur, Indore and many other cities. National highways 11, 15, and 89 meet at Bikaner. There is a under construction domestic airport at nal 14 km from city which will start its flights for Delhi and Jaipur from January 2012
Bikaner is famous for -:
1) Its camel research farm (NRCC). 2) Its "Bikaneri Bhujia. 3) Its wool production. 4) Its sweets. 5) PATA culture ( Wooden made big square size table which is laid upon the streets where localites sit at their leisure )
Bikaneri Bhujia is a spicy snack made from moth dal, spices and edible oil. Bikaner is also known for its handicrafts and leather articles, for its palaces and for having Asia's biggest camel farm.
The city is also known for its intricately carved Jharokas. These red sandstone stone jalis (screens) are found on the windows of the Junagarh fort, temples and havelis (mansions of Northern India). Jalis would be used for ventilation and for women to watch the world while remaining hidden.
The red sandstone for these stone window screens was supplied by the nearby village of Dulmera.
Usta & Chadhwa Art
Bikaner was and is the centre for Usta Art, a generic term for the Manoti-Naqqashi (embossed and unembossed floral and geometric patterned objects layered with gold) media produced by Usta family master artistans of Bikaner. The Usta artists and artisans also controlled all production of the Bikaner School "miniature" paintings using translucent and opaque vegetable and mineral watercolours from the late-16th to late-19th Century. Famous painters of the Bikaner School were Hamid Rukn-ud-din, Ahmad, Nathu ji, Nure, Rahim, Isa, Iso, Sahab-ud-din, Rehim ji,Murad, and Abdul Shakoor.

Devotees who approach this holy occasion (following the path between hamlets) are served with food and refreshment by the gathering of another devotees. This fair is considered must visit among local public of bikaner hence a very longe que (More than 5 km) of devotees is witnessed at this occasion before the temple. Punarasar temple is situated closer to highway leads to Jaipur that's why this high way is known as Punarasar highway too!
• Kodamdesar Mela :- Kodamdesar mela is celebrated in the village of Kodamdesar 20 km far from bikaner where the temple of lord bhairoon is situated. This temple have no roof for covering the statue of bhairoon nath. It is said that your journey to Kodamdesar is incomplete until you visit the temple of sahu baba. Chura and Surdashani purohit are the casts who have utmost faith upon kodamdesar bahiroon.

• Siyana Bhairoon mela : This fair is known for the utmost celebration by Hindu casts Ojha, Bhadani, chhangani and derasri. Devotees from this community along with others reach siyana village of bikaner by cart, buses, car, bike and on feet. Siyana village is known for the temple of lord bhiroon who is believed to bless all amenities to his devotees they prayed for.
• Camel festival: each January the state government organises a camel festival with camel races, various cultural events and a fire dance performed by the Sidh people.
• Aksaye Tritya or "AKKHA TEEJ": the foundation day of Bikaner. This was the day when Rao Bika laid the foundation of the new empire. Every year on this day people from across the social spectrum enjoy themselves by flying kites or "CHANDA". They also enjoy a special meal, such as "Khichra and Imlani".
• Paryushan: The biggest festival of Jain community is celebrated with utmost fervour and dedication in the city in the Bhadrapad month of Hindu calendar. The temples are lavishly decorated. Spiritual ceremonies and fasting are seen everywhere in the city.
• Kartik Poornima: The Jain community takes out a huge procession on this day consisting of paintings, palki of tirthankar and musical bands. It traverses all the areas inhabited by Jains. Local bhajan mandalis or Spiritual Bands perform with great excitement on this occasion. This festivity is unparalleled in India.
Attraction:
The fort was built by Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner who reigned from 1571 to 1612. Rai Singh had conquered part of Marwar and had been granted territory in Gujurat and Burhanpur by the Mughal emperor Akbar as a reward for his services as military commander. This, as well as funding from Jodhpur, enabled him to build the fort. Rai Singh held high rank in the imperial courts of both Akbar and his successor, Jehangir. During his imperial service he travelled extensively, giving him an appreciation of art and architecture. These ideas have been incorporated meticulously into the architectural style of Junagarh Fort.

Munshi Prem Chand "Upanayas Samrat"

Munshi Premchand: - (Hindi: मुंशी प्रेमचंद, (July 31, 1880 – October 8, 1936) was a famous writer of modern Hindi-Urdu literature. He is generally recognized in India as the foremost Hindi-Urdu writer of the early twentieth century. He is a novel writer, story writer, and dramatist. He is known as "Upanyas Samrat" which means a great emperor among novel writers.
Premchand was born on July 31, 1880 in the village Lamhi near Varanasi in a Kayastha family to Munshi Ajaib Lal, a postal clerk, and his wife Anandi. His parents named him Dhanpat Rai ("master of wealth") while his uncle, Mahabir, a rich landowner, called him Nawab (Prince), the name Premchand first chose to write under. His early education was at a local madarsa under a maulvi, where he studied Urdu. Premchand's parents died young - his mother when he was seven and his father when he was sixteen or seventeen and still a student. His father's death left Premchand with no other option but to absent himself from the intermediate examination he was going to give that year. Moreover Premchand was left responsible for his stepmother and step-siblings. The next year when he gave his intermediate examination, indeed he got successful scoring second division but he was unable to enter college. Coincidentally near Varanasi in Chunar there in a school he got employed as a teacher. From 1899 to 1921 Premchand worked as a school teacher when in Gorakhpur he gave resignation as a government employee on call of Mahatma Gandhi. Being in profession as a school teacher he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree.
Premchand was married at fourteen years to a girl from a neighboring village, but the marriage was a failure, and when he left the village in 1899 the girl returned to her village. Several years later, in 1909, he married a young widow named Shivrani Devi. This step was considered to be revolutionary at that time, and Premchand had to face a lot of opposition. On February 8, 1921 Mahatma Gandhi in a seminar in Gorakhpur in which Premchand was also present asked people to resign from government jobs. Premchand, although physically unwell, with two kids at home, his wife pregnant took a vow and after five days of mental conflict decided to resign from his government job albeit with the agreement of his wife. To serve the cause of Independence Premchand tried writing for the columns of Urdu dailies of Gorakhpur Tehkik and Swadesh but his failure to do that led him to settle in Varanasi, again coincidentally four months after giving resignation from his government job Premchand arrived at Marwari Vidyalya, Kanpur but his conflicts with the school principal and manager led him to get back to Varanasi. In Varanasi he took the responsibility of editing the magazine Maryada, later he became principal of Kashi Vidyapith a school in Varanasi. On its closure he worked for his ambitious project of running a printing press. Though he ran it but it didn't gave him any financial profits. Finally he accepted the job offer of editing the journal Madhuri. He remained in Lucknow for six years and remaining there in 1930 he started the weekly Hans being printed in Varanasi. In early 1932 Premchand came back to Varanasi. Along with Hans he started another weekly Jagran, only to find it unmanageable although technically sound. In order to unburden himself from loan resulting from both the weeklies he worked as script writer for Ajanta Cinetone in Mumbai. He wrote for film Mazdoor and before the completion of his annual contract he came back to Varanasi because more than Mumbai it was the culture of Mumbai film industry which was leaving him blank. Himanshu roy, the founder of Bombay Talkies, insisted on Premchand not leaving Mumbai but he didn't wanted to stay. In Mumbai itself his health had deteriorated and after coming back to Varanasi, he fell ill. After several days of sickness, Premchand died on October 8, 1936.

This article is about the former President of India
born 15 October 1931) usually referred to as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is an Aerospace engineer, Professor and chancellor of Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 During his term as President, he was popularly known as the People's President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Before his term as India's president, he worked as an aeronautical engineer with DRDO and ISRO. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology. Kalam played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear test in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

He is currently the chancellor of Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, a professor at Anna University (Chennai), a visiting professor at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Indian Institute of Management Indore, and an adjunct/visiting faculty at many other academic and research institutions across India.
In May 2011, Dr. Kalam launched his mission for the youth of the nation called the What Can I Give Movement.

Early life and education

Abdul Kalam was born in Rameshwaram presently Tamil Nadu in British India in 1931. He spent most of his childhood in financial problems and started working early in his age to supplement family's income.

After completing his school education, Abdul Kalam graduated in physics from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli. After which he went to graduate with a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering in the mid-1950s from the Madras Institute of Technology.As the Project Director, he was heavily involved in the development of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-II).

Career

After graduation from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT - Chennai) he was the Project Director, he was heavily involved in the development of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). As Chief Executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program(I.G.M.D.P), he played a major part in developing many missiles in India including Agni and Prithvi although the entire project has been criticised for being overrun and mismanaged.^[8] He was the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of Defence Research and Development Organisation from July 1992 to December 1999. Pokhran-II nuclear tests were conducted during this period and have been associated with Kalam although he was not directly involved with the nuclear program at the time.

In his book India 2020, Abdul Kalam strongly advocates an action plan to develop India into a knowledge superpower and a developed nationby the year 2020. He regards his work on India's nuclear weapons program as a way to assert India's place as a future superpower.

It has been reported that there is a considerable demand in South Korea for translated versions of books authored by him.

Kalam continues to take an active interest in other developments in the field of science and technology. He has proposed a research program for developing bio-implants. He is a supporter of Open Source over proprietary solutions and believes that the use of free software on a large scale will bring the benefits of information technology to more people.
